The Blue Ribbon is Back!
Yes! March is colorectal cancer awareness month--Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer today; and is the second most common cause of cancer death. Fortunately, many cases of colorectal cancer are preventable--consider screening tests if you haven't done so yet:
Colonoscopy: Every ten years for average risk patients, starting at age 45, or every 5 years if you have a family history of colon cancer. Some more rare genetic conditions or other diseases may require even more frequent screening. Its an easy test, and not nearly as bad as what you may have heard!
Cologaurd: This is a test that examines your stool for blood or proteins shed by polyps. If it is positive, a follow up colonoscopy is needed. This is indicated for average risk patients, and should be performed every three years.
Other options are less common but include: CT colonography, double contrast enema, or a combination of fecal occult blood testing and flexible sigmoidoscopy.
Here at Waxahachie colorectal, we strive to provide the best possible counseling about screening for colorectal cancer, and the highest quality colonoscopies possible--learn more at our colonoscopy page.
