I just had the privilege of reviewing multiple surgical videos for an international research project we are involved in. It is always helpful to see how other surgeons approach a particular task--you pick up lots of little things that help to make you a better surgeon yourself! One of the recommendations I frequently give to surgical trainees is to participate in as many surgeries as possible and view as many surgical videos as possible. It's important for training, but equally important in practice--surgeons can always improve and to think otherwise is to miss an opportunity for personal growth. You can read a recent study looking at just this here:
Fortunately, video review is easier than ever now with so many resources available--beyond just youtube, you have surgical video libraries curated by the national societies, like ASCRS and SAGES, and the new collaboration Surgeon app, which all have more moderated content. Time to get some popcorn!
