'Bikini' Colectomy

Exciting weekend! Dr. Stacy Nguyen presented our series of 'bottom up' robotic right colectomy operations at the North Texas ACS meeting.
In this surgery, all the incisions are placed low on the abdomen, where they would be covered by a bikini, which is different than robotic right colectomies performed elsewhere, where the incisions go in a diagonal line across the abdomen.
The benefits are more than just cosmetic! Compared to our standard port placement, the 'Bottom Up" patients left the hospital one day sooner (average of just two days, with many patients leaving in one day!!)--we theorize this is because incisions lower on the abdomen are generally associated with less pain and are felt less during breathing.
This has been Dr. Olson's standard approach to right colectomy for over three years now, and he has had no conversions to an open or other approach.
More to come on this technique later, we are presenting additional data at the national colorectal meeting in May!
If you are interested in this feel free to call the office to scheduel an appointment-we do in person and virtual consultations as well!!
